Privacy Policy

Settleo is an iPhone app for splitting shared expenses with friends, and settleo.net is its website. This policy explains what data we handle, why, and the choices you have. The short version: most of your data stays on your iPhone, we only store what is needed to sync shared groups, we don’t show ads, and we never sell or share your data for advertising.

Data that stays on your iPhone

Expenses you split on your own (outside a shared group), your settings, your Venmo username and the Venmo usernames you add for friends stay on your device. Receipt photos are read on your iPhone with Apple’s on-device text recognition; the photos are not uploaded to us. Voice input uses Apple’s speech recognition, which runs on your device when your iPhone supports it; otherwise Apple may process the audio under Apple’s own privacy policy. Face ID is handled entirely by iOS — we never receive biometric data. When you add a friend from Contacts, only the contact you pick is read, and it stays on your device unless you add that person to a shared group.

Your account

You can use Settleo without an account. To create or join a shared group you sign in with Apple or with a one-time code sent to your email. We store your account identifier and email address (with Sign in with Apple this can be a private relay address) so you can sign in and so the groups you belong to can sync.

Data in shared groups

For groups you create or join, we store the group name and currency, members’ display names, and the group’s expenses and payments (descriptions, amounts, currencies, dates, who paid, how each expense is split, and payment notes). Everyone in a group can see that group’s data. This is what makes balances and “who owes whom” match on every member’s phone.

Exchange rates

To convert expenses between currencies, the app downloads daily exchange rates from our server, which gets them from a public rates provider. These requests contain no personal data.

Subscriptions

Settleo Pro is sold through Apple’s App Store. Apple processes the payment; we never see your card or billing details. The app only checks with Apple whether your subscription is active.

The website

settleo.net uses Vercel Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages are useful. It does not use cookies and does not build a profile of you. Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address and browser type) for security and reliability.

If you join the launch waitlist, we store your email address, the page you signed up from and the date. We use it only to send one email when the app launches, and we delete it within 30 days after that email, or sooner if you ask. To stop abuse of the form we keep a one-way hash of your IP address (made with a secret key, so the IP itself is never stored) for up to 24 hours.

What we don’t do

We don’t show ads, we don’t track you across other apps or websites, and we don’t sell or share your personal data for advertising. The app contains no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.

Service providers

We use a small number of providers to run Settleo: Supabase (database and sign-in), Vercel (website hosting and analytics), Apple (Sign in with Apple, App Store subscriptions, on-device and speech services) and an email delivery provider for sign-in codes and the launch email. They process data only to provide these services to us.

Security

Data is encrypted in transit. Our database enforces row-level security so each person can only access the groups they belong to, and sign-in tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain on your device.

Keeping and deleting your data

We keep account and group data while your account exists. You can delete your account at any time in the app: Settings → Delete account. This removes your account and email address. Groups that only you belonged to are deleted. In groups shared with others, the expenses and payments stay so your friends’ balances remain correct, but your name is replaced with “Former member”. Deleted data may remain in encrypted backups for a short period until those backups expire. Data stored only on your iPhone is removed when you delete the app.

Your choices and rights

You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it or to delete it by emailing support@settleo.net. Depending on where you live (for example, California or the European Economic Area), you may have additional rights, and we will honor them. We do not sell personal information.

Children

Settleo is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we will update the date above, and for material changes we will let you know in the app or on this website.
